According to insiders, Park Jung Min and Jisoo will lead Coupang Play’s new series Influenza, penned by Han Ji Won and Ji Ho Jin and directed by Yoon Seong Hyun.
Influenza is set against the backdrop of Seoul’s high-rise air-raid bunkers. It follows soldier Jae Yoon and his recently-dumped girlfriend Young Joo as they battle hordes of zombies while recklessly running towards each other. The series is an adaptation of a novel by Han Sang Woon.
Expectations are high for this new breed of K-Zombie drama, blending the unexpected comedy of Han Jin Won, writer of the critically acclaimed Parasite, with Bleak Night and Time to Hunt director Yoon Seong Hyun’s nuanced direction.
Park Jung Min will play Jae Yoon, a man who, at the ripe age of 26, enlists in the military as a last-ditch effort to secure alternative service employment in the defense industry. After breaking up with his girlfriend due to his anxieties about the future, he finds himself confronting a world turned upside down by zombies. Initially meek and lacking in confidence, he gradually steps up as a leader in his squad as they face the undead.
As for Jisoo, she’ll be taking on the role of Young Joo, an entry-level worker navigating the struggles of young adulthood. She receives the heartbreaking news of a breakup from Jae Yoon, who has been a constant source of stress for her as he never seems to understand her feelings for him. While initially setting out to meet her boyfriend, she witnesses the outbreak of zombies and is pulled into a fight for survival, where she undergoes a remarkable transformation.
With such rich characters and an enthralling setup, Influenza promises to be the next big thing in K-drama.
