Japanese influencer Gamix is facing backlash over an alleged racist gesture made during a dance challenge for ATEEZ member San’s song “BAD.”
Gamix, who has more than 2 million followers, posted a video on social media on August 20th participating in the point choreography for ATEEZ’s new song. However, the video quickly drew criticism after Gamix appeared to make a “slant-eye” gesture, a gesture commonly used to mock or demean East Asian features.
While a photo of San was displayed at the bottom of the video, Gamix pulled the corners of their eyes outward with both hands while performing the choreography. The gesture sparked further criticism because of its racist connotations and the fact that Gamix is also Asian.
As the backlash grew, Gamix initially deleted the video without offering an explanation or apology. However, they later re-uploaded it. In the new version, Gamix pointed to their own eyes and said, “These are Asian eyes. My eyes don’t open every morning. Why is it like this every morning?” The response only fueled further criticism.
Netizens left comments including, “Are you mistaking yourself for a Westerner?” and “I can’t understand what you were thinking posting such a video when you are also Asian.”
Gamix eventually deleted the second video as well. As of now, they have not issued a public apology or explanation regarding the controversy.
Gamix primarily posts soccer-related content and currently has around 2.16 million followers. They gained wider attention during the 2026 FIFA World Cup after posting a video of themselves crying while watching a Brazil-Japan match surrounded by Brazilian fans.
