ATEEZ have been blowing up since the release of their new song “BAD” from their 14th mini album Golden Hour: Part.5, with member San leading the group to stardom with every puff of his broad chest. Now, a recent interview with the group’s leader, Hongjoong, is turning heads.
Leader of ATEEZ and rapper Hongjoong appeared on the Zach Sang Show, a trending pop-culture interview hub known for getting personal with its guests, to discuss his recent success. Hongjoong met with the host not only to share stories regarding ATEEZ’s successful comeback but also to disclose some personal stories about himself. One question in particular garnered attention from fans, and the answer almost left them in tears.
When asked why he only paints one fingernail, Hongjoong delicately explained that he is a part of the Polished Man Campaign, a global movement challenging men and individuals to paint one fingernail to spark conversations and raise funds to end violence against women and children. “When I was young, I saw some artists do this (painting one nail), and I thought if I become a good K-Pop artist, or any artist, I just want to do that same thing too.” Fans who were unaware of the campaign were completely moved and felt touched by Hongjoong’s sincere answer.

The star felt motivated and moved by the campaign and liked the idea of getting the conversation started through this eye-catching method. “Everyone asks me why I do that (paint one fingernail), and I explain this whole thing is one of (many) campaigns.” Fans expressed their love for the star even more, leaving comments such as “We are so proud of him,” “I’m happy I Stan an idol with such good values,” and “I also remember when he made a huge donation on Children’s Day for youth who were caregivers to their ill or disabled family members.” Fans also commented on his ability to do the hour-long interview completely in English, saying, “His being able to express himself so well in a second language is so impressive,” and “He improved so much.”
Hongjoong also discussed his personal music journey, from sending a demo to KQ Entertainment, his love for boy group Block B, and from training alone for six months to becoming the leader of a world-renowned K-Pop group. With nearly 200 songwriting credits under his belt, Hongjoong shared how much music has impacted his life and how much he wants to impact others with his own sound.
