Byeon Woo Seok graces four covers of Elle Korea’s November issue, marking his first cover shoot as a Bvlgari ambassador. In the accompanying interview, the actor discussed his upcoming Netflix series Solo Leveling, his Asian fan meeting tour and his outlook on life.

Speaking about meeting fans, Byeon admitted that he sometimes struggles to hold back tears.

“When I meet fans, there are moments when I feel unexpectedly overwhelmed. Seeing their faces and hearing them cheer for me can really get to me. I tell myself I won’t cry this time, but when it actually happens, I can’t help it (laughs).”

He also shared what he enjoys about visiting different cities during his tour.

“I like trying local food and walking around to get a feel for the place. What makes it special is getting to see where my fans live their everyday lives. It means a lot to know that people from different cultures and backgrounds support me.”

Currently filming Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Solo Leveling, Byeon plays Sung Jin Woo, an E-rank Hunter who rises from being one of the weakest to becoming extraordinarily powerful.

“Sung Jin Woo is different from any character I’ve played before. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to understand him and bring him to life. Since physical movement is such an important part of the role, I find myself paying attention to how I move and carry myself even off set.”

Explaining what drew him to the character, Byeon said, “I liked that he wasn’t strong from the start. He was weaker and more afraid than anyone else, but he kept pushing forward to protect what mattered to him. I want to stay true to the original story while showing a side of Jin Woo’s emotions that’s unique to the live-action adaptation.”

Asked whose life he would choose if he could “level up” into someone else, Byeon said he was content with his own.

“I’m happy with the life I have now. I still want to grow and improve, but rather than becoming someone else, I’d rather keep being me. Even if I were born again, I’d want to level up as Byeon Woo Seok (laughs).”
