Kong Hyo Jin has come to the defense of Jung Jun Won after he faced criticism for appearing overly nervous and passive during a recent variety show appearance.
Kong Hyo Jin shared a photo of Jung Jun Won on her Instagram Story on August 4th and revealed what happened behind the scenes during the filming of MBC’s Hangout with Yoo.
Referring to Jung’s failed attempt at the show, she wrote, “My [onscreen] husband ended up throwing up after the recording. I couldn’t come to his rescue. Sorry.”
Her comment suggested that Jung’s struggles on the show were the result of extreme nervousness rather than a lack of effort.
Jung Jun Won and Kong Hyo Jin recently appeared together on the August 1st episode of Hangout with Yoo to promote their upcoming MBC drama A Bona Fide Killer. The appearance marked Jung’s first time on a variety show.
During the broadcast, Jung appeared visibly nervous and had difficulty answering questions from host Yu Jae Seok. He also struggled with a segment in which guests must deliver the same line while expressing different emotions, such as curiosity, anger and sadness.
Yu Jae Seok and the cast repeatedly tried to help him relax, telling him things like, “Why are you so nervous?” and “It’s your first variety show. You can take it easy.” However, Jung remained tense and stiff throughout the filming.
He looked toward Kong Hyo Jin for support when he had trouble responding to questions at several points. After failing the challenge, Kong Hyo Jin eventually stepped in and attempted it herself.
Following the episode, some viewers criticized Jung’s performance, arguing that he appeared unprepared and too passive during a program meant to promote his drama.
As the criticism grew, Hangout with Yoo cast member Haha defended Jung in the comments section of social media posts.
“I was there that day, and he was lovely, cute and funny,” Haha wrote. “He’s not a professional entertainer, so I hope people will watch him kindly and just enjoy the show. I applaud him as an actor.”
Kong Hyo Jin’s latest post also appeared to support Jung by highlighting just how overwhelmed he was during filming.
Despite those defenses, reactions online remain divided. While some viewers sympathized with Jung’s first variety-show experience, others argued that appearing on television to promote a project comes with certain expectations and that nervousness alone does not excuse a lack of participation.
