Girls’ Generation’s Sunny opened up about her older sister’s hearing impairment while listening to the story of a couple who are both hard of hearing. Sharing her family’s experience, Sunny expressed her empathy for the couple and their journey.
On the KBS 2TV Chuseok special What Song Express aired on September 21st, Lee Seung Chul, Tak Jae Hoon and Sunny surprised people with songs inspired by their personal stories.
The second story featured a married couple who both have hearing impairments. The 33-year-old husband was born with a hearing impairment and shared how his mother took him from Geoje to Busan for treatment when he was around three years old. He requested a song to thank her for all the sacrifices she made for him growing up.
His wife also shared that she was diagnosed with a hearing impairment after her parents became concerned that she still wasn’t speaking at age two. The couple discussed their experiences with hearing aids and cochlear implants, explaining that adjusting to a cochlear implant can take significant time because everyday sounds may initially seem unfamiliar or mechanical.
As Sunny listened to their story, she carefully shared a personal experience of her own.
“Actually, my sister also can’t hear out of one ear,” she revealed. “Just as you said, it took her a long time to start hearing after the surgery.”
It was the first time Sunny had publicly spoken about her older sister’s hearing impairment, which had not been widely known. Having experienced a similar journey with her own family, Sunny appeared particularly understanding of the couple’s struggles.
The couple also shared the challenges of living with cochlear implants, which must be removed while sleeping and showering. They recalled once learning about a fire alarm only through their apartment group chat because they had removed their devices while asleep, making them realize how dangerous a real emergency could be.
The husband also used the opportunity to thank his mother for supporting him throughout his childhood, saying he wanted to repay her for everything she had done for him.
