Roh Yoon Seo is opening up about her chemistry with Nam Joo Hyuk in Netflix’s The East Palace.
During an interview on July 23, the actress said working with Nam made her feel supported, both in the playful exchanges between their characters and during the show’s action scenes.
“I would suggest how we could approach a scene, and it turned out he was thinking the same thing,” she said. “We were completely in sync. We kept things light and comfortable on set. It was fun filming with him.”
As for the relationship between Gu Cheon, played by Nam, and Saeng Gang, played by Roh, the actress said they intentionally kept the physical affection subtle.
“We talked about how it would be better to keep it to things like holding hands or hugging,” she said.
Roh said they didn’t try to define the bond as either love or friendship. “At first, neither of them had any particular feelings for the other,” she explained. “But things kept happening, and they kept saving each other, so that bond gradually grew.”
By the end, she said, both characters become singularly focused on keeping the other alive.
“It was a feeling that couldn’t really be summed up in one word,” Roh said. “When I was acting, I focused more on the situation than on trying to label the emotion.”
Released on July 17, The East Palace follows Gu Cheon, a man who can move between the human and spirit realms, and Saeng Gang, a palace maid who can hear ghosts. Summoned by the king (Cho Seung Woo), the two set out to uncover the curse haunting the eastern palace.
Roh plays Saeng Gang, an inspector palace maid ordered by the king to keep watch over Gu Cheon.
