Nam Joo Hyuk is returning to romance.
The actor will lead the upcoming drama Heartbeat, according to a July 23 report from MyDaily.
The bittersweet romance follows a woman who can see the past and a man who looks exactly like her late first love. As the two become caught up in a mysterious incident, he must keep his own past hidden.
Nam will play Cha Shin Jo, the man with a secret.
The story begins when the heroine’s first love, long believed to be dead, suddenly returns. Though built on a fantastical premise, the drama explores the universal dream of a first love that never truly dies.
Heartbeat will be produced by Bon Factory and written by Lee Si Eun, the screenwriter behind True Beauty and Lovely Runner.
The drama marks Nam’s return to the romance genre following tvN’s Twenty-Five Twenty-One in 2022. Since then, he has taken on darker, more action-driven projects including Vigilante, The East Palace and the upcoming Disney+ series Code.
Nam most recently led Netflix’s The East Palace, which premiered on July 17 and ranked No. 2 on the platform’s Global Top 10 list for non-English shows within three days. The series also entered the Top 10 in 27 countries.
In The East Palace, he plays Gu Cheon, a man who gains the ability to travel between the human and spirit realms after losing his mother at a young age.
