Netflix has greenlit the Japanese series Parasyte: Tamiya, set to premiere worldwide in 2027.
The project reunites Yeon Sang Ho with production company WOWPOINT as they continue expanding the Parasyte universe following Parasyte: The Grey.
Based on Hitoshi Iwaaki’s long-running manga franchise, Parasyte: The Grey debuted in 2024 and spent four consecutive weeks on Netflix’s Global Top 10 non-English TV list, reaching No. 1 in 34 countries and regions.
The new series centers on Ryoko Tamiya, a high school teacher who appears human but is secretly a dangerous parasite. After meeting Shinichi Izumi, who coexists with Migi, she begins questioning whether parasites can survive by living alongside humanity.
Parasyte: Tamiya will tell an original story through her perspective as she wrestles with identity and coexistence.
Yeon will oversee planning and co-write the series with Ryu Yong Jae, while WOWPOINT will handle production. Glass Heart of Kensaku Kakimoto and Kazuhiro Nakagawa, who directed Double and co-wrote Bullet Train Explosion, will direct the series.
Shioli Kutsuna will star as Tamiya. The actress is known for Netflix’s Sanctuary and her role as Yukio in Deadpool 2, and is also set to appear in the first live-action Gundam film.
Yeon praised Kutsuna for capturing Tamiya’s transformation. “She captured the journey of a nonhuman being coming to understand both humanity and her own existence with truly remarkable acting,” he said.
He called Tamiya one of the original manga’s most compelling villains.
“Her existential struggle elevated ‘Parasyte’ beyond a simple hero story and gave it real depth,” Yeon said. “I wanted to portray her constantly questioning coexistence between humans and parasites, failing, and ultimately coming to her own realization. To me, that inner conflict is the very essence of ‘Parasyte.'”
Yeon also noted that the series will offer a fresh take distinct from the anime, previous live-action films and Parasyte: The Grey, while remaining deeply respectful of the original work.
Parasyte: Tamiya will premiere exclusively on Netflix in 2027.
