Disney Plus series A Shop For Killers wowed viewers back in 2024 with its dynamic fight scenes, endless thrills and breakout cast. Now, the question on everyone’s mind is simple– can the sequel match the energy of its more than stellar debut season?
Although Netflix has been dominating this year’s K-Drama scene, Disney Plus ace-in-the-hole, A Shop For Killers, already garnered significant attention with its teasers. Season one topped Disney Plus charts for three consecutive weeks, attracted a global audience, and even gained critical acclaim, earning spots on The New York Times‘ list of best international TV shows. The follow-up episodes continue to ride on the first season’s success, highlighting just what went down and revealing more regarding the cliffhanger finale surrounding Jeong Jin Man (played by Lee Dong Wook) and his death. Jong Ji An (Kim Hye Jun), like fans of the series, is still visibly torn by his death and wonders how she can continue on with the team if she is plagued by her guilt and emotions.
The drama is well known for its combative martial arts sequences and adrenaline-packed action scenes, but the first episode takes time creating intensity through a different dynamic. The show utilizes the thrills of faking Jeong Jin Man’s death and of how he did it to set the pace for season two. Discussing himself as Bale (Jo Han Sun) was the real cherry on the plot twist cake, and things started off with a bang as he blew down the doors of the Babylon hideout, a deadly organization with new emerging threats under their belt.
The fact that the show didn’t start off with too many theatrics was an excellent route for the storyline. It doesn’t come off as desperate to keep the viewers’ attention or as overdone. The first two episodes help paint the picture of season two’s plot and what’s to come with the various changes in power dynamics. Episode one laid out the blueprints by following up on season one’s death scene finale without feeling repetitive. The process by which Jeong Jin Man tricked everyone effortlessly bridges the new season’s anticipated story. Most dramas heavily rely on action, but A Shop For Killers masterfully blends the thrill of being caught in action or executing cunning schemes with hacking and infiltration to keep viewers riddled with anxiety and interest. Similar to the famous film franchise Ocean’s, Jeong Jin Man is a mastermind with a capable team equipped for the job.

The character dynamic goes unchanged, and familiar on-screen favorites like So Min Hye (Geum Hannah), an assassin from Red Code, Kuma, the brute of Babylon, and the trustworthy teammates Pasin and Brother all make an appearance and maintain their original atmosphere. Seeing the team back in action feels like meeting an old friend, and viewers can immediately feel immersed in the series and recollect key moments from season one.
As expected, episode one ends with a real bang. Lee Dong Wook’s character makes a grand reappearance and successfully one-ups Babylon, but characters like Lee Yong Han (Ahn Kil Kang) still prove to be a threat and aren’t giving up the hunt for blood. Threats are even emerging from Osaka, Japan, and begs the question of what new faces will be joining the fight? The ending of episode one also contained heart-warming moments as Jong Ji An gets to reunite with the “ahjusshi” and playfully hits him with a barrage of punches after seeing him still alive.

Now that the famous uncle-niece mercenary duo is back in action, we can only sit with bated breath in hopes of what other exciting thrills are awaiting around the corner. (8.5/10)
