The first anniversary of Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu‘s passing was marked by an emotional memorial statue unveiling, but the absence of her two children has sparked questions.
Taiwanese media outlet ETtoday reported on February 3rd on the controversy surrounding the non-attendance of Hsu’s daughter and son at the ceremony held the previous day.
In response, Mandy Ma, the current wife of Hsu’s ex-husband Wang Xiaofei, addressed the situation.
“I am not sure how the two families communicated regarding the event,” Ma stated. “However, the children returned to Beijing the day after their winter vacation began. I am simply helping to manage their daily lives.”
Ma, who is currently pregnant, has reportedly been heavily involved in raising Hsu’s children, often speaking publicly about their close bond. She noted that she personally handles their school drop-offs, helps with homework, and accompanies them on trips.
Barbie Hsu passed away suddenly on February 2 of last year at the age of 48 due to complications from pneumonia while on a family trip to Japan.
Her death devastated fans across Asia, particularly due to her cinematic love story with K-pop legend DJ Koo. The pair had dated in the 90s, broken up, and then miraculously reunited and married in 2022 after two decades apart.
To honor her memory, DJ Koo and Hsu’s family held a statue unveiling ceremony on the anniversary of her death at the Jinbaoshan Cemetery in Taiwan. DJ Koo personally participated in creating the sculpture.
The event was attended by Hsu’s mother and sister, as well as DJ Koo’s close friends, including Kang Won Rae of Clon and Choi Siwon of Super Junior.
