Kim Min Hee has spoken publicly for the first time about her experience balancing childcare and acting after becoming a mother.
During an official Q&A session at the Locarno International Film Festival on August 14th, Kim Min Hee discussed her latest film Nowhere to Lay My Eyes and shared what it was like returning to filming after a two-year break following the birth of her child.
“This was the first film I worked on after taking about two years off after giving birth,” Kim Min Hee said. “My circumstances had changed a lot.”
She explained that her baby was with her on set, meaning she had to manage childcare responsibilities while working. “I had to breastfeed and prepare baby food. The first thing I did every day was finish everything my baby needed. Only after that could I focus on the film.”
Kim Min Gee added that her approach to acting had changed after becoming a mother. “The determination to focus only on the film, as I had before, was no longer there,” she said. “Instead, I found a healthier mindset — doing my best after taking care of my child first. I think that naturally became part of the character San Hhee.”
She also shared her thoughts on the film’s message, saying, “I think the beauty of everyday life comes from accepting and enjoying moments as they are, rather than trying too hard or pretending. I believe that feeling is reflected in the character.”
Her comments have drawn attention as they mark her first public remarks about combining motherhood and her film career after giving birth to her son last year.
Meanwhile, Kim Min Hee stars as Sang Hee in director Hong Sang Soo’s Nowhere to Lay My Eyes, which was invited to the international competition section of the 79th Locarno International Film Festival. Hong Sang Soo served as the film’s director, screenwriter, cinematographer, editor, and composer, while Kim Min Hee also took on the role of production manager alongside acting.
