A video allegedly showing former EXO member Tao hitting his wife, Xu Yiyang, recently sparked controversy online. However, further investigation revealed that the clip had been heavily edited.
Recently, short-form videos spread across YouTube and social media platforms appeared to show Tao reaching toward Xu Yiyang’s face, followed by her seemingly slapping him. The clip quickly led to speculation and discussions about possible domestic violence.
However, the situation changed after a fact-checking video titled “Ex-EXO Tao Video with Serious Fabrication” compared the viral clip with the original footage. The video revealed that the couple had actually been playing games, including rock-paper-scissors and “chamchamcham,” a Korean reaction game, in a playful setting.
The original footage showed a lighthearted moment between the couple. After Xu Yiyang lightly tapped Tao’s cheek during the game, she held his face with an apologetic expression before both of them laughed.
While the misunderstanding has been cleared up, some fans and netizens still raised concerns, commenting that “even if it was part of a game, the gesture could easily be misunderstood.”
Tao debuted as a member of EXO in 2012 but left the group in 2015 to pursue his career in China. He and Xu Yiyang, a former SM Entertainment trainee, were first linked by dating rumors in 2020. The couple publicly confirmed their relationship in 2024 and registered their marriage later that year.
Earlier this year, Tao also gained attention after appearing on Hong Kin Kyung’s YouTube channel, where he revealed that he runs a feminine hygiene product business. He shared that the company sold 150 million units and generated 150 million yuan ($22 million) in revenue within three months.
