Korea’s blockbuster action franchise The Roundup is officially back for a fifth installment.
The Roundup 5 has confirmed its main cast, including Ma Dong Seok and Kim Jae Young, and began filming on May 24th.
The film follows “monster detective” Ma Seok Do as he launches a new crime-busting operation against Lee Kang Tae, who begins carrying out his worst crimes after an eight-year wait.
Ma Dong Seok, the face of the franchise, returns as the one-and-only Ma Seok Do. Also involved in the script and production, Ma will once again lead the series both on and off screen. Now promoted to team leader of the Metropolitan Investigation Unit, Ma Seok Do remains on the front lines with the same unshakable drive to take down the bad guys. This time, he faces an even more evolved form of crime in a high-stakes showdown.
Kim Jae Young joins as Lee Kang Tae, the fifth villain of the franchise. Playing a man who stops at nothing to get what he wants, Kim is expected to show a striking new side of himself.
The new cast also brings fresh energy to the series. Seo Hyun Woo plays Go Young Min, a detective in Team 1 of the Metropolitan Investigation Unit and a reliable force who helps lead the team alongside Ma Seok Do. Lee Hak Ju appears as Han Sang Gu, an accomplice who helps Lee Kang Tae carry out his crimes, adding more tension to the story.
Baek Hyun Jin joins as Kim Min Chul, the head of the Metropolitan Investigation Unit, while Kim Min Ho plays Buldak, rounding out the lineup. Director Heo Myeong Haeng, who oversaw the franchise’s action choreography and directed the fourth film, returns to bring his signature hard-hitting action back to the screen.
The Roundup series has made history as the first Korean film franchise to score three 10 million-viewer hits and has surpassed 40 million admissions overall. With The Roundup 5, the franchise is set to carry on its winning formula while opening a new chapter with a bigger story and upgraded thrills.
