Paramount Pictures is officially moving forward with its highly anticipated English-language remake of the South Korean thriller The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil, tapping blockbuster director James Wan to lead the project.

Global action star Don Lee, also known as Ma Dong Seok, is set to reprise his iconic role from the 2019 original, further cementing his status as a leading man in the international market. Lee will also produce the film under his Big Punch Pictures banner.

According to The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, James Wan—the mastermind behind The Conjuring universe and director of billion-dollar hits like Aquaman and Furious 7—will direct and produce through his company, Atomic Monster. The production is a collaboration between Blumhouse, Sylvester Stallone’s Balboa Productions, BA Entertainment, and B&C Group.

The screenplay is being penned by Shay Hatten, the writer behind the John Wick franchise and Rebel Moon. The script is based on an earlier draft by Brian Helgeland, who won an Oscar for L.A. Confidential.

Paramount has been working on the remake since acquiring the rights in 2022. Following its acquisition by Skydance last year, the studio has been collaborating with big names like James Wan to develop large-scale projects. Industry experts predict that Wan’s proven directorial success combined with Lee’s distinct action style will create a powerhouse collaboration.
