Hwang Jung Eum, who was sentenced to a prison term of two years with a four-year suspension for embezzling company funds, has returned to the public eye after a nearly year-long hiatus.
Hwang Jung Eum announced her comeback on May 19th by launching her official YouTube channel.
Appearing on camera for the first time in a while, Hwang Jung Eum confessed, “Everything feels awkward,” unable to hide her nervousness. She continued, “There was a major incident that many of you know about, and I’ve been busy trying to resolve it. I’ve done my best to take responsibility within my capacity to ensure no one was harmed because of me,” she shared about her recent activities.
She also addressed the controversial issue of advertising penalty fees. “I have paid all the penalty fees,” she stated, adding, “However, paying the money does not resolve my wrongdoing, and I am deeply sorry. It is beyond words how upset I am that my actions have caused harm to the production crew, advertisers and fans,” she said, bowing her head.
Hwang Jung Eum was indicted last May on charges of embezzling approximately 4.3 billion won from her one-person entertainment agency. She was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for four years in the first trial. As Hwang Jung Eum did not appeal, this sentence was finalized.
Regarding the harsh scrutiny she faced, she calmly remarked, “I was able to endure because of my children. I have to live on as a mother.” She continued, “There will be people who do not want to see me, and I accept that. That is something I must earn forgiveness for. I believe I need to do something diligently until many people feel at ease,” she stated.
She further added, “My marriage failed, my efforts to earn money this time failed, everything failed. Experiencing such difficult times made me realize how many people in the world are struggling. I want to let single mothers or mothers raising sons know that ‘you are not alone'”, signaling her intention for continued communication.
Meanwhile, Hwang Jung Eum married businessman Lee Young Don, a former professional golfer, in 2016, and they have two sons. Although the couple reunited after a previous separation, their divorce was finalized in May of last year.
