Girls’ Generation member Sooyoung opened up emotionally about her father’s deteriorating eyesight and expressed gratitude for the unwavering support she’s received from her fellow members.
On the May 6th episode of tvN’s You Quiz on the Block, Girls’ Generation members Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sooyoung—making their subunit debut as “HyoRiSoo”—appeared together and shared stories about their longtime friendship.
During the episode, Sooyoung spoke about her father, who has been battling retinitis pigmentosa, a rare degenerative eye disease. She also revealed the current condition of her father’s health, saying, “My dad has had this illness for about 15 years now, and he’s almost completely lost his vision.”
“Dad is actively involved with a blindness prevention organization,” Sooyoung added. “Whenever there was volunteer work or donations, I usually went by myself.”
She then recalled a touching moment with fellow member Yuri. “One day Yuri told me, ‘Sooyoung, your dad is doing such meaningful work. Why didn’t you tell me sooner?,’” she said. Since then, the members have continued donating together ever since. “It feels like they’re carrying my family’s burdens with me too,” she added emotionally.
“It meant a lot that there were people who would say, ‘Sooyoung’s dad doing something important. Let’s help if there’s anything we can do,’ even without me asking,” she said, proudly highlighting the strong bond between the Girls’ Generation members after nearly 20 years together.
Yuri also reflected on the group’s close friendship, saying, “At some point, I realized we should naturally take care of not just work, but also each other’s families and personal lives.” She added, “I’ve received that same kind of support from the members too. When that support grows bigger and bigger, it makes you feel like you can get through anything.”
