The box office dominance of The King’s Warden is sending ripples through the release schedules of upcoming historical dramas. Most notably, the production team behind Canvas of Blood, already a hot topic for its star-studded pairing of Kim Nam Gil and Park Bo Gum, is reportedly locked in careful deliberations regarding its premiere date.
The King’s Warden has set a high bar, earning rave reviews for its gritty portrayal of the power struggle between Kings Danjong and Sejo. However, this success poses a challenge for Canvas of Blood.
Since both films are set during the Gyeyu Jeongnan (the 1453 coup), there are concerns that audiences familiar with The King’s Warden might find the historical setting repetitive.
Despite sharing the same historical timeline, the two films offer vastly different perspectives: The King’s Warden focuses on the brutal struggle for political power and the throne, whereas Canvas of Blood centers on the creation of Prince Anpheong’s artistic masterpiece.

The film aims to explore the internal turmoil of the artist through striking visual storytelling rather than political maneuvering. Kim Nam Gil takes on the role of Sejo of Joseon, navigating the tragic tension between power and family, while Park Bo Gum delivers a nuanced performance as Prince Anpyeong, an artistic soul inevitably caught in conflict with his older brother.
A production insider acknowledged the heightened stakes: “The bar for historical dramas has been raised significantly by The King’s Warden, so the pressure is certainly there. However, our strength lies in the symbolism of the painting itself and the psychological depth of the characters, rather than just a historical reenactment.”
The distributors are currently searching for just the right release window, one that avoids going head-to-head with the current box office leader while still taking advantage of the renewed public interest in period pieces.
