Kim Hye Jun says filming romantic scenes for My Bias, My Boss proved more challenging than some of the action-heavy roles she is used to.
The actress spoke about her first romantic comedy during an interview in Seoul on September 8th ahead of the tvN drama’s finale.
My Bias, My Boss follows Nam Da Reum (Kim), a fan who joins a company to get closer to her favorite star, and Kang Ha Gi (Kang Hoon), the CEO of the company where she works.
Asked about the difficulties of filming intimate scenes, Kim laughed and said, “Kiss scenes were harder than the scenes of shooting guns.”
She was especially pleased with the kiss between Nam Da Reum and Kang Ha Gi in Episode 8.
“Once they added the music, editing and filter, it was actually pretty romantic,” Kim said. “I was a little worried after filming because it was quite long, and I wondered whether viewers might get bored. But when I watched it, it was fun. As a female viewer myself, my heart fluttered.”
Kim said the production put considerable effort into getting the scene right.
“It wasn’t that we had to take many takes. They just shot it from so many angles,” she said. “The director really wanted to put a lot of care into the kiss and romantic scenes. We practically filmed it from 360 degrees. It was embarrassing at first, but eventually I got used to it.”
The physical closeness required for a romantic comedy also took some adjustment.
“The actors are much closer together when you’re actually filming than it looks on screen,” Kim said. “The director would look at the monitor and say, ‘Can you move a little closer?’ and we’d be like, ‘Closer than this?'”
She added that maintaining prolonged eye contact was also uncomfortable at first, but became easier over time.
“I think rom-coms are fun because of that slightly cringey feeling,” she said. “If we were only going to act realistically, we might as well make a documentary.”
Kim also credited Kang Hoon with helping her adjust to the genre.
“He really understands rom-coms,” she said. “Even with lines that could feel embarrassing, he knew how to carry them in his own rhythm.”
“And he’s really thoughtful,” Kim added. “He would tell me, ‘The most important thing is that you look pretty,’ and paid more attention to my angles than his own.”
