Director Bong Joon Ho shared his heartfelt thoughts about the late actor Lee Sun Kyun during a recent appearance on MBC’s Sohn’s Questions on February 18th.

When host Sohn Suk Hee brought up Lee Sun Kyun, who starred in Bong’s Oscar-winning film Parasite, he asked about the actor’s tragic passing and the concerns many have raised about the police investigation process. “Many people still find his death devastating. Regardless of the reason, there are many who question whether there were issues with the police investigation process. What are your thoughts on his death?” Sohn asked.

Taking a deep sigh at the mention of Lee Sun Kyun, Bong responded, “He was someone I worked with, and various memories keep crossing my mind.” He added firmly, “He was a good person, no matter what anyone says. He was a good actor.”

Addressing his participation in the statement released about Lee’s death, Bong explained, “As a colleague who worked with him, it was only natural to participate in the statement.” He continued with visible emotion, “At the same time, I felt sorry and ashamed. I should have done it earlier. I felt guilty about why we couldn’t have acted faster before such an unfortunate situation occurred.”

Lee Sun Kyun passed away in December 2023 while under police investigation for alleged drug use, having undergone three rounds of questioning. Following his death, Bong Joon Ho joined other cultural and artistic figures in releasing a statement in which they expressed doubts about the police investigation’s security measures and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Lee’s death.
