Squid Game creator Hwang Dong Hyuk has found himself in hot water following a series of controversial interviews about the Netflix phenomenon’s second season.

Despite the show hitting #1 in 93 countries within two days of its release, Hwang’s recent comments about the Korean market’s reception have sparked significant backlash. “I’m very grateful. A show’s popularity can only be measured by viewing time, and it’s clear that people worldwide have loved and waited for ‘Squid Game,'” the director initially stated.

However, his following remarks struck a nerve with Korean audiences. “Even a stray dog gets half a bowl at home, but we’re getting the harshest responses in Korea. We’re at home, and yet we’re uncomfortable. I wish there was more support,” Hwang said. His comments appear to address the ongoing criticism of Season 2, particularly regarding the controversies surrounding cast members T.O.P and Park Sung Hoon.

The Korean public’s response has been notably frosty. Online commenters fired back with remarks like “Investors should stop him from giving interviews,” “Who ignored public opinion about casting controversial actors?” and “This isn’t the Olympics. Why expect unconditional support?”

This isn’t the first time Hwang’s bold statements have raised eyebrows. In a YouTube interview with InStyle before the season’s release, he declared, “I’ve been saying this lately—if Squid Game 2 isn’t entertaining, nothing in this world is.” When Lee Byung Hun attempted to calm him, Hwang doubled down: “If you don’t find this entertaining, you’re just depressed.”

The director’s confrontational stance extended to his response to NBA star LeBron James’ comment of the season’s ending. In an interview with The Guardian, Hwang retorted: “I’m very thankful he watched the whole series. But I wouldn’t change my ending. That’s my ending. If he has his own ending that would satisfy him, maybe he could make his own sequel. I’ll check it out and maybe send him a message saying, ‘I liked your whole show, except the ending.'”
