It’s been revealed that Son Suk Ku was offered roles in both seasons of Netflix’s Squid Game, but he ultimately declined both. A close acquaintance recently shared the reasons behind his decision in an interview.

One of Son Suk Ku’s close associates told Newsen on December 9th, “When he was with his previous agency, Son Suk Ku was offered the role of Sang Woo, later played by Park Hae Soo, by the Squid Game production team. However, he decided not to take the role.” This happened about three years ago, as Season 1 was released in September 2021.

In Season 1, Sang Woo is a team leader at an investment firm who joins the deadly game due to his 6 billion won debt. He finds himself in the ironic position of fighting for survival against his childhood best friend, Sung Gi Hun (played by Lee Jung Jae). As one of the main characters, he appears in nearly all nine episodes alongside Lee Jung Jae.

The associate added, “At the time, Suk Ku and his agency were interested in the Squid Game script, but they didn’t expect it to become such a huge hit. After Season 1 became a worldwide sensation, it would be a lie to say he and the agency didn’t feel regret, but they comforted each other by saying that every role has its destined actor.”

Shouldn’t he have joined Season 2 then? The associate explained, “He was open to appearing, but by the time he received the script, most of the main roles had already been cast.” Due to security protocols, he only received a portion of the script, and the key roles of Yim Si Wan and Kang Ha Naul had already been confirmed. This led to concerns and differing opinions about his screen time and the main plot. Not to mention that his schedule was packed with filming for Disney Plus’s Casino.

In 2022, Son Suk Ku discussed Squid Game, a project that could have been part of his filmography, during an appearance on the variety show Movie Room while promoting his self-directed film Unframed. He expressed his admiration for the series, saying, “It felt very fresh from a director’s perspective. Unlike typical death games where individuals kill each other, I liked the unique setup where they cooperated as a team.”

Squid Game Season 2 is now available on Netflix.
