Seungri, a former member of BIGBANG, is facing another controversy after being sued for alleged assault. A photo believed to have been taken at a drinking session on the day of the alleged incident has also surfaced online.
The photo, shared on an online community on September 13rd, shows Seungri wearing a black hat and casual T-shirt as he poses for the camera. A birthday cake, snacks and several bottles of soju can be seen on the table.
The controversy began after a man in his 30s filed a lawsuit against Seungri at Gangnam Police Station in Seoul on August 26th. He claims Seungri assaulted him at a restaurant in Gangnam.
Seungri’s side has denied assaulting the man and offered a different account of what happened.
According to Seungri’s representatives, Seungri was having a meal with two acquaintances at a sundae-guk restaurant in Gangnam around 6 AM on August 8th. The man, who was drinking at another table, allegedly approached them and asked to hear about their business ideas. He also reportedly insisted on joining them.
Seungri’s side said they turned him down several times, but he continued to approach them. Seungri picked up a bottle while explaining that they would not be joining him during the conversation, but his representatives said he did not swing the bottle or threaten the man.
They claimed the man eventually joined their table. The group listened to his business ideas, drank together and exchanged contact information.
Seungri’s representatives also said the man texted Seungri several hours later, saying, “I’ll bring my business plan next week,” after Seungri saw him off.
Seungri’s side said they were therefore “baffled” that the man later filed an assault lawsuit.
Seungri was previously a key figure in the Burning Sun scandal, which rocked South Korea in 2018. He left BIGBANG and retired from the entertainment industry following the scandal.
He was later sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison after being convicted of nine charges, including prostitution, arranging prostitution, habitual gambling, and instigating special assault. He was released on February 9th, 2023, after serving his sentence.
