Suzy has opened up about her acting career, the different sides of herself she has discovered through her roles and how she chooses her next projects.
The October issue of Elle was released on September 14th along with an interview with Suzy.
During the interview, Suzy reflected on the different characters she has played, including Yang Seo Yeon in Architecture 101, Lee Yu Mi in Anna, Lee Doo Na in Doona! and Gi Ga Young in Genie, Make A Wish.
She also talked about what she has learned about her own face through acting.
“I used to wonder why people called my face the face of first love,” Suzy said. “Then I heard that my face is simple and familiar, which makes it easy for people to see different emotions in it. That made me realize I could use my face to play all kinds of characters.”
She added, “I sometimes discover expressions or sides of my face that I didn’t know existed as time goes by. When that happens, I feel really happy because I realize there are still parts of myself I haven’t discovered.”
Suzy also explained how her approach to acting has changed.
“I don’t just look at the character itself now,” she said. “I think more about the relationships they have with other people and the environment they grew up in.”
She continued, “Even when something isn’t in the script, I imagine what experiences the character has been through and create my own reasons and backstory for them.”
Suzy compared the characters she has played to different rooms in her heart.
“I’ve always thought of my heart as having many rooms,” she said. “I have affection for all the characters I’ve played, along with some regret. But I’m someone who likes to focus on the present, so I think I’ve closed those rooms well.”
“The only room that’s wide open is for Men of the Harem, which I’m currently filming,” she added.
Suzy also discussed her upcoming projects.
She spoke about Seven O′Clock Breakfast Club for the Brokenhearted, which premiered at last year’s Busan International Film Festival and is still waiting for its theatrical release. “I was drawn to the project because people who have experienced similar pain can talk about it more honestly with each other,” she said.
She also talked about Portraits of Delusion, another upcoming film. “The mysterious atmosphere and the deep stories about women in Director Han Jae Rim’s writing really appealed to me,” Suzy said. “While playing Song Jeong Hwa, I felt like I was able to show many different sides of myself on screen.”
“It was challenging, but I really enjoyed the process and learned a lot,” she added.
When asked what she looks for when choosing her next project, Suzy admitted that she still doesn’t have a clear answer. “Honestly, I still don’t really know,” she said. “I want to work on projects and play characters that I’m drawn to at that moment.”
“I think I just trust whatever pulls me toward the next project,” she added.
