Hyun Bin is getting candid about how marriage to Son Ye Jin has transformed his life while tackling his most demanding role to date in the upcoming historical epic Harbin, directed by Woo Min Ho.
During an interview with SPOTVNEWS on December 19th, the leading man opened up about portraying the legendary independence activist An Jung Geun, describing it as his most mentally taxing project yet. The star found solace in his wife’s understanding and support throughout the production.
“Her comfort meant a lot,” Hyun Bin revealed. “My wife must have been lonely too, while I was constantly filming. As an actor herself, she deeply understands how challenging this type of project can be. Her simple words of ‘good job’ and ‘you worked hard’ after I finished meant the world to me. Just the fact that she expressed these things, despite going through her own challenges, meant so much.”
The film features a poignant moment where his character abandons his family for the greater cause. “I kept wondering if I could make that same choice,” Hyun Bin reflected. “Could I leave my family behind for the country like General Ahn did? It wouldn’t be easy.” Now a family man himself, he expressed his desire to contribute to a better future, stating, “Whatever form it takes, we need to work toward a better tomorrow. I believe I should take on that role.”
The star candidly addressed how marriage has shifted his perspective: “Everything changed (after marrying her). Everything is different now. People need to evolve,” he shared with a smile. “I’m still cautious, but if there’s something I can express within appropriate boundaries, I’ll share what I can.”
“I think these changes come naturally as you age, start a family, have a child, and experience new things in life,” he added with a warm smile.
Harbin chronicles the intense pursuit between those heading to Harbin for a singular mission and their pursuers in 1909. The film will hit the theaters on December 24th.
