Song Joong Ki, adorned in Louis Vuitton’s Fall-Winter 2024 formalwear collection, graced the May cover of Arena Homme Plus Korea. During the interview, he shared insights into his responsibilities as an actor and as an individual.
The actor garnered significant attention with his portrayal of North Korean defector Loh Kiwan in the Netflix original film My Name Is Loh Kiwan, released last March. When asked if his career direction had shifted after the film, Song responded, “Apart from ‘Descendants of the Sun’, none of the works had the mainstream narrative. They all harbor a minor sentiment. In that regard, I think I’ve had a consistent standard.”
One famous anecdote among fans is that Song secretly decided to repeat a year for a college exam. However, when asked about his biggest life challenge, he said, “This was a bigger challenge than becoming an actor. I was a short-track skater for a long time. My lifelong dream was to be a national athlete. The biggest challenge in my life was when I had to give up the sport I truly loved.”
During filming, Song insists on having “group dinners,” believing that camaraderie among colleagues greatly influences the quality of the project. For those who don’t prefer group dinners, he makes an effort to accommodate everyone’s preferences. “I don’t stick to the same menu. It’s better to enjoy a variety of tasty foods. There’s a joy in arranging the first, second, and third rounds of dining. It has become a habit for me. Whenever I visit a new restaurant, I always count the number of tables to see how many people it can accommodate.”
Lastly, when asked how he would like to be remembered, the actor answered, “As an actor who’d make great firewood. People watch movies because they hope the two hours spent watching them are worthwhile, whether that space is a cinema or an airplane. An actor’s job is to make those two hours enjoyable. Nothing more, nothing less. In that sense, I want to be remembered as someone useful for passing the time.”
