Jang Dong Ju is starting a new chapter in his career after signing an exclusive contract with a major live content company.
The move comes six months after Jang announced a temporary break from acting in May following reports that he had accumulated billions of won in debt. At the time, he revealed that he had already repaid 3 billion won ($2.2 million) and said he would step away from acting until he cleared the remaining balance.
Jang also strongly denied the “meal theft” allegations that emerged during the controversy and announced to take legal action against those spreading false information, defaming him or violating his privacy. Since then, he has continued to communicate with fans through TikTok Live broadcasts.
OSEN reported on July 31 that Jang has officially signed an exclusive contract with Universe Label, one of South Korea’s largest YouTube live content companies.
Universe Label reportedly saw strong potential in Jang, praising his competitiveness as a content creator and his ability to engage viewers. Jang appeared on its live broadcasts and reportedly earned around 20 million won ($14,700) in viewer donations during a single session after signing with the company.
Jang has also continued his activities on TikTok Live. Within just three weeks of joining the platform, he reached the A1 league and won live battles against other celebrity creators, including actor Park Si Hoo. He has been showing his potential in a new field beyond traditional acting through livestreaming.
An entertainment industry insider told OSEN, “Jang Dong Ju’s quick wit, hosting ability and talent for connecting with audiences—skills he developed through acting—are major strengths.”
The source added, “Just as he brought different characters to life across various genres as an actor, he is now bringing his own personality and style to livestreaming. He is a creator who can add his unique touch to any type of content.”
Despite his new career direction, Jang has not given up on acting. In a statement to OSEN, he said, “My priority right now is to work hard in any way I can, without being selective, and repay the remaining debt.”
He continued, “If I get the chance, I hope to return as actor Jang Dong Ju after I fulfill my responsibilities.”
Jang made his acting debut in the 2012 stage production A Midsummer Night’s Dream (literal translation). He later appeared in dramas including School 2017 and Trigger, as well as films such as Honest Candidate, Count and Handsome Guys. His most recent role was Hyun Woo Seok in the SBS drama No Tail to Tell, which ended in February.
