Bong Joon Ho’s first animated feature, Ally, is officially headed to theaters in summer 2027.
The film will open in France on July 14th, 2027, with a South Korean release set for the same month. A U.S. theatrical release is also planned, though a date has not yet been announced.
Directed by Bong and produced by Barunson C&C, Ally follows a group of deep-sea creatures fascinated by the human world above them. At the center of the story is Ally, a curious piglet squid who dreams of seeing the sun and becoming the star of a wildlife documentary.
Her peaceful underwater life is disrupted when a mysterious aircraft crashes into the ocean, sending Ally and her friends on an unexpected journey toward the surface.
Ally marks Bong’s first feature-length animated film and brings together artists and production talent from 12 countries, including South Korea, France and the U.K.
Sleep director Jason Yu co-wrote the screenplay with Bong. The voice cast includes Alex Jayne Go, Ayo Edebiri, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Finn Wolfhard, Rachel House and filmmaker Werner Herzog.
The international production team also includes animation supervisor Kim Jae Hyung, whose credits include Toy Story 4 and Inside Out, and Klaus production designer Marcin Jakubowski. Shrek and Shrek 2 veteran David Lipman is also involved, while DNEG, the visual effects studio behind films including Inception and Dune, is participating in the production.
CJ ENM and Penture Invest are handling investment and distribution in South Korea, as well as distribution in Vietnam, Turkey and Indonesia. French studio Pathé is co-financing the film and will distribute it in France, Benelux, Switzerland and West Africa.
In the U.S., Ally will be distributed by NEON, which previously released Bong’s Oscar-winning Parasite in North America.
Ally is set to begin its global theatrical rollout in July 2027.
