Jang Dong Ju has shocked the public by posting a disturbing video of himself engaging in self-harm, following his announcement of retirement.
The actor wrote on social media on May 22nd, “I’m tired of the promises I’ve broken countless times with myself, my family, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues. Lastly, the promise I broke with my father, linking our little fingers. I hate this little finger that has broken so many promises, so I will cut it off. I will use this crisis as an opportunity to find my original self from two years ago.”
The video appeared to show scenes of him harming a part of his body. He added, “Let’s get a grip. This is the last chance. There’s nowhere else to fall from here.”
Jang Dong Ju later apologized, saying, “I sincerely apologize for uploading a video of self-harm. This video was not intended to threaten anyone or imply an extreme choice, but was posted to engrave a resolution for my misguided life into my brain. I am currently receiving treatment and support from my family and am regaining my composure. I sincerely apologize for causing anxiety and worry, and I am truly grateful to everyone who will pray for me.”
Earlier, on May 15th, he announced his retirement via social media, stating, “I intend to lay down the life of actor Jang Dong Ju as of today.”
In response, his then-agency, Management W, released a statement on May 17th, saying, “The retirement announcement by Jang Dong Ju was made solely by the actor’s decision without any discussion or consultation with our company. This action is irresponsible, as he betrayed the responsibilities and trust of an actor during the contract period. We clearly state that the actor himself bears full responsibility for the confusion and damage caused by this incident.”
On May 18, Jang Dong Ju’s career information on his portal site profile was updated to “businessman,” identifying him as the CEO of a specific private company. This change, reportedly made by Jang Dong Ju himself.
