The Melon Music Awards 2023 (MMA2023), hosted by the domestic music platform Melon, has announced its “Top 10” winners, with girl groups making up half of the list, signifying this year’s girl group whirlwind in the K-pop market.

On the 17th, Melon revealed the “Top 10” winners for this year’s MMA, which includes BTS, Jungkook, Lim Young Woong, SEVENTEEN, NCT Dream, NewJeans, LE SSERAFIM, IVE, aespa, and (G)I-DLE. The winners were selected based on 80% Melon music performance and 20% from paid (3 votes per day) and free (1 vote per day) member voting. This category is one of the main awards of MMA.

Despite BTS’s hiatus this year, their June release, the 10th-anniversary commemorative single Take Two, achieved 1 million streams in 24 hours, earning them a “Millions Album” certification. BTS is not only part of the “Billions Club” with a cumulative 1 billion streams but also uniquely listed in the “Diamond Club,” reserved for those with over 10 billion streams.

Jungkook of BTS also made it to the “Top 10” as a solo artist. His solo debut song “Seven” enjoyed global popularity this summer. SEVENTEEN topped Melon’s Top 100 chart for the first time this year as a K-pop boy group with their song “God of Music,” while NCT Dream gained popularity with their third album ISTJ.

This year’s “Top 10” saw a significant presence of girl groups. NewJeans, who set a new record for the longest duration at number 1 on Melon’s Top 100 with their hit “Ditto,” LE SSERAFIM with consecutive hits like “Unforgiven” and “Perfect Night,” and IVE with hits like “I AM” were among the top. aespa, who reached number 1 on the Top 100 chart with “Spicy,” and (G)I-DLE, who enjoyed massive popularity earlier this year with “Queencard,” are also notable “Top 10” girl groups.

Meanwhile, MMA2023 will take place on December 2nd at 5 PM KST at the Inspire Arena in Yeongjongdo, Incheon, South Korea’s first K-pop specialized arena.
