Director Maggie Kang, the Korean-Canadian filmmaker behind the animated hit KPop Demon Hunters, and acclaimed Korean director Kim Jee Woon are set to gain voting rights for the Academy Awards.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which oversees the Oscars, announced its list of 529 invited artists and executives who have been selected to join the organization as new members on June 24th.
Among the invitees was Maggie Kang, whose film KPop Demon Hunters won two Oscars earlier this year for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. Co-director Chris Appelhans and producer Michelle Wong were also invited to join the Academy.
Several members of the KPop Demon Hunters team also received invitations, including singer EJAE, who voiced the film’s lead character Lumi and contributed to the lyrics and composition of the award-winning song “Golden,” as well as co-lyricist Mark Sonnenblick and editor Oren Jacoby.
Other Korean invitees include cinematographer Kim Woo Hyung, who worked on director Park Chan Wook’s No Other Choice, screenwriter-director Lee Kyoung Mi, and director Kim Jee Woon, best known for films such as I Saw the Devil and Cobweb.
Korean-American actor Kenneth Choi, known for The Wolf of Wall Street and the Spider-Man films, was also among those invited.
If they accept the invitation, they will officially become Academy members and gain the right to vote on future Oscar nominees and winners.
Academy membership is by invitation only and is offered to individuals who have made significant contributions to the film industry.
