Netflix has officially confirmed production of its upcoming medical drama First Doctor, starring Jung Ryeowon, Ha Yoon Kyung, Bek Hyun Jin, Kim Jong Soo and Kim Moo Yul.
The series reunites director Hong Jong Chan of Teach You a Lesson and writer Kim Min Suk, the Baeksang Award-winning creator behind the acclaimed Netflix drama Juvenile Justice.
First Doctor follows the staff of a pediatric surgery department that is on the brink of being shut down. As the hospital faces mounting challenges, a dedicated team of doctors fights to keep the department alive while caring for some of its most vulnerable patients.
Jung Ryeowon stars as Heo Ji Wan, a highly skilled pediatric surgeon known for her blunt personality and uncompromising nature. Often viewed as the hospital’s biggest troublemaker, Ji Wan returns to Yeonhwa University Hospital after an unexpected incident and becomes determined to save the struggling department and protect her young patients.
Ha Yoon Kyung plays Ki Eun Gyeol, a talented third-year resident whose confidence, intelligence and rebellious streak frequently put her at odds with Ji Wan. Their tense mentor-mentee relationship is expected to be one of the drama’s central storylines.
Veteran actors Bek Hyun Jin and Kim Jong Soo portray two powerful figures within the hospital: Head of Surgery Son Sang Baek and Vice Director Lee Chang Gon. Their competing interests and influence add another layer of tension as the future of the pediatric surgery unit hangs in the balance.
Kim Moo Yul joins the cast as Bae Su Wol, a charismatic anesthesiology professor and one of Ji Wan’s closest friends. The role marks his third collaboration with director Hong Jong Chan following Juvenile Justice and Teach You a Lesson.
While First Doctor features the high-stakes world of medicine, the series aims to go beyond traditional hospital drama conventions. It will explore the challenges facing modern healthcare systems, the emotional bonds formed between medical professionals and patients, and the determination of those who refuse to give up on saving lives.
