When asked how Ha Do Woung (Jung Sung Il) felt about Moon Dong Eun (Song Hye Kyo), Kim Eun Sook responded, “He says that he doesn’t know although he hates saying that. I think that line conveys his feelings pretty well.” She continued, “He’s only useful to Dong Eun if he’s still Yeon Jin’s husband. If he leaves Yeon Jin, he has no reason to meet Dong Eun. He wasn’t sure how he felt about her back then. I think it’s when he was eating the triangle kimbap that he realized that he liked her.”

Regarding the decision to make Dong Eun’s mother (Park Ji Ah) her daughter’s first assailant, Kim Eun Sook said, “Here’s the thing about the victims. Their families should be their first line of protection, but that just wasn’t there for them.” She further explained, “(The mother) always emphasized the importance of family. Dong Eun used that (for her revenge). Something only she could do as her family. I wanted to return the same to her mom.”

About the death of Jae Jun (Park Sung Hoon), Kim Eun-sook said that it was part of Dong Eun and Do Young’s plan. “I wrote it thinking that it was a part of their calculations. Though there’s no scene about it. Dong Eun took part, and from the roof to the fall, it was Do Young. I imagined they worked on it together.”

Writer Kim also mentioned Kyung Ran (Ahn Soyo). “Not all victims can move on like Dong Eun. I didn’t want Dong Eun to look like a heroine. I wanted to show there are victims who can break away from them. I thought that would make it sadder.”

She then analyzed Joo Yeong Jung’s (Lee Do Hyun) psychology. “Those who have been wounded recognize each other. When they ran into each other in the ER, he saw that she had malnutrition. At first, he just wanted to help her. They met again in Go Square by coincidence,” Kim said. “Over time, I think she must have intrigued him. Though it was a brief moment, he forgot he was a victim. ‘She’s my savior’ – like it says in the poster. He fell for her slowly, and even the fact that she disappears makes her perfect.”

Regarding the punishment Park Yeon Jin (Lim Ji Yeon) received, Kim opened up, “I wanted it to be humiliating.” She added, “Of course, she lost everything, and she was framed for something she didn’t do. She’ll be humiliated in prison. She lost her glory.” About her final weather forecast scene in prison, Kim commented, “I thought that was the most insulting ending for Yeon Jin.”

The last topic Writer Kim brought up was the ending scene. “(Dong Eun and Yeo Jung) are entering a prison. They’re heading to another purgatory. If they love each other that much, they’d smile every once in a while as long as they’re together,” she shared.
