The team behind the much-loved series The Fiery Priest is officially reuniting for a second season, confirmed by SBS. Announced on the 24th, the powerhouse ensemble of Kim Nam Gil, Lee Ha Nee, Kim Sung Kyun, and BIBI are all set to return, promising a new chapter filled with comedy, action, and drama in The Fiery Priest 2, scripted by Park Jae Bum and directed by Park Bo Ram.
The show, a comedic detective drama, follows the fiery Catholic priest Kim Hae Il, portrayed by Kim Nam Gil, who is known for his temperamental zeal and unyielding sense of justice. This season, Kim Hae Il finds himself embroiled in a drug-related mystery that takes him from Gudam-gu to Busan, escalating the stakes and the laughs. The reunion of Kim Nam Gil, Lee Ha Nee, and Kim Sung Kyun, beloved for their on-screen chemistry five years ago, is one of the season’s most anticipated highlights. New to the cast, Bibi will introduce a fresh dynamic.
Kim Nam Gil resumes his role as the hot-blooded priest, blending comic misadventures with action-packed scenes. Lee Ha Nee reprises her role as the sharp-witted and tough prosecutor Park Kyung Sun, who, despite her formidable skills, is humorously infatuated with handsome men. Kim Sung Kyun portrays Gudam Police Station’s brash detective Ku Dae Young, whose bluster often leads to mishaps, yet his soft-hearted nature earns him the nickname of being more priest-like than the priests.
Additionally, BIBI steps into the shoes of Ku Ja Young, a dedicated narcotics detective in Busan, marking a significant shift from her previously intense and somber roles in dramas like The Worst of Evil and Hopeless.
The production team has promised that every aspect of the show has been “megaton-level upgraded,” from the humor and action to the criminal narratives. “Kim Nam Gil, Lee Ha Nee, and Kim Sung Kyun have delivered insane performances, and Bibi has injected new vitality into the story,” the producers shared. Following the explosive success of the first season, which concluded in 2019 with peak ratings of 22% (Nielsen Korea), fans have highly requested the upcoming season.
Meanwhile, The Fiery Priest 2 will premiere in the second half of 2024.
