Lim Ji Yeon is opening up about the story My Royal Nemesis did not get to fully tell.
On the July 1st broadcast of the SBS Radio show Joo Hyun Young at 12 o’clock, Lim appeared as a guest to talk about her recently-concluded drama My Royal Nemesis, which ended on June 20th.
The series follows Shin Seo Ri, an unknown actress possessed by the spirit of Kang Dan Shim, a notorious woman from the Joseon era who rose from lowborn status to royal consort. It also centers on her tense, high-stakes romance with Cha Se Gye, a ruthless conglomerate heir known as a “monster of capitalism.”
Lim Ji Yeon played both Shin Seo Ri and Kang Dan Shim, while Heo Nam Jun starred as Cha Se Gye and Prince Yi Hyeon.
During the radio show, Lim said she wished viewers could have seen more of Dan Shim and Yi Hyeon’s Joseon-era story.
“The show doesn’t really show Dan Shim’s story before and after she meets Prince Yi Hyeon, how she became the royal consort after they separated, or how she ended up being forced to drink poison,” Lim said. “Before I could study Shin Seo Ri, I had to understand Kang Dan Shim first, but there weren’t many scenes that brought Dan Shim to life on-screen. There was so much left untold, so I felt a little sad about that. Whenever Dan Shim and Yi Hyeon met, I had so much of their story in my head, so it felt wistful and very brief.”
Lim added that she understood why the drama could not spend too much time on the past-life storyline.
“Seo Ri and Se Gye’s story is the main story, so they couldn’t show too much of it,” she said. “As actors, we go in knowing the full context and imagining everything around it. There was so much I had imagined, but they had such small screen time. It was such a wistful, tender and heartbreaking story.”
When asked about fans calling for a spin-off centered on Dan Shim and Yi Hyeon, Lim said the idea has already come up behind the scenes.
“We actually talked about it recently at a dinner,” she said. “I jokingly asked them to tell more of Dan Shim’s story, and because the writer has so much more to say, she happily said she would think about it.”
