Namkoong Min is being honest about the tough competition his new drama is heading into.
On July 1st, KBS held a press conference for its new weekend drama The Husband, attended by director Kim Jung Hyun and cast members Namkoong Min, Lee Seol, Kim Dae Myung and Lee Sang Hee.
The Husband is a crime thriller that follows Kang Tae Joo, a doctor who is forced into a dangerous fight against the ruthless criminal No Man Hee after his wife, Go Se Yoon, is kidnapped just as their marriage is on the brink of divorce.
During the event, Namkoong Min was asked about competing with SBS’ Friday-Saturday drama Agent Kim Reactivated. Starring So Ji Sub, the series has already become a breakout hit, surpassing 15% in ratings after just two episodes.
“I’ve watched it too, and I really enjoyed it,” Namkoong said. “It’s fun, it has a fresh premise, and it makes great use of a story that feels distinctly Korean.These days, it is not an easy time for people making dramas, so even though it is our competition, I am happy to see a drama doing well.”
Still, Namkoong admitted the timing is not exactly ideal.
“The one thing that is a little disappointing is that our time slots overlap a bit,” he said. “‘Agent Kim Reactivated’ is doing so well in the ratings, and dramas are usually the most fun around episodes three and four. Our show is starting right when ‘Agent Kim Reactivated’ is likely to be at its most exciting, so that is a little unfortunate.”
Even so, the actor said the two dramas offer very different experiences.
“They have different tones,” he explained. “If ‘Agent Kim Reactivated’ has a more imaginative feel, ‘The Husband’ has more depth and feels closer to reality. I believe our drama has its own appeal.”
Namkoong also expressed confidence in the project, saying, “I chose this drama because I wanted to give viewers something entertaining.”
The Husband premieres July 4th at 9:20 PM KST.
