Lee Joon Gi is set to take on one of the biggest acting transformations of his career as he reunites with director Ahn Tae Jin.
MyDaily reported on June 21st that Lee Joon Gi will star in Netflix’s upcoming historical film Dochabi (literal title).
Known for his roles as righteous and complex characters, the actor is expected to surprise viewers this time by playing a powerful villain.
Dochabi, which comes from a native Korean word meaning “goblin,” is a new historical film from Onda Works, the production company behind The King’s Warden, one of the highest-grossing films in Korean cinema history.
The film is directed by Ahn Tae Jin, who also directed The Night Owl and The Second Signal, and it has already been drawing significant attention during its development stage.
What makes the project especially notable is the long history between Lee Joon Gi and Ahn Tae Jin. Ahn previously worked as an assistant director on Lee’s breakout film King and the Clown, which drew 10.51 million viewers in 2005. Now, 21 years later, they will reunite as director and lead actor for Dochabi.
With that shared history, expectations are high that Lee will reveal a completely new side of his acting. Over the years, he has shown wide-ranging versatility across both film and television, including King and the Clown, May 18, and dramas such as Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Flower of Evil, Again My Life and Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun.
Now, attention is focused on how he will portray a villain who drives the story’s tension. Dochabi is currently in its final casting stages and is expected to begin filming in August.
