Na Hong Jin’s new film Hope has officially set its release dates for South Korea and North America.

Invited to the competition section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, Hope has already drawn major attention ahead of release after being pre-sold to more than 200 countries and territories around the world.

The film has also been earning strong praise from international critics since its world premiere. RogerEbert.com called it “bold, provocative, and assured filmmaking that oscillates between moments of breathtaking cinematic prowess and satirical characterizations,” while The Hollywood Reporter described it as a “superbly sustained pedal-to-the-metal experience.”

French outlet Libération also praised the film’s action, saying that in terms of pure spectacle, Hope outpaces much of American action cinema since George Miller’s work.

Hope begins with people tracking down the mysterious force that attacked a rural village, then expands into a desperate fight to protect the town before shifting into a new perspective. With its unpredictable rhythm, explosive energy and high-impact action, the film is expected to deliver one of this summer’s biggest cinematic experiences.

The story follows Beom Seok, the head of a branch office in Hopo Port near the Demilitarized Zone, after local young men report seeing a tiger. As the entire village goes on high alert, he is pulled into an unbelievable reality.

Directed by Na Hong Jin, renowned for his immersive storytelling, striking visuals, and masterful direction, Hope opens in South Korean theaters on July 15 and is set to release in North America on Wednesday, September 9th.
