Japanese idol group M!LK has become embroiled in plagiarism allegations regarding aespa’s track “Whiplash.”
Today, discussions spread online claiming that Japanese idol group M!LK’s new song teaser bears striking similarities to aespa’s “Whiplash.”
The controversy centers on a teaser for M!LK’s song “E Jan (イイじゃん)” uploaded to their official account on the 17th. Netizens have pointed out that the introductory melody closely resembles the melody of aespa’s “Whiplash” lyrics: “C’mon, focus, think fast, They’re reasons you’ll never understand, Know I did that, Day 1 know I been bad, Don’t stop.”
According to the teaser, the song is scheduled for release on March 5th.
Netizens who have compared M!LK’s video with aespa’s “Whiplash” left comments: “Why suddenly insert ‘Whiplash’ into a cheerful song,” “I don’t even want to give it the benefit of the doubt,” and “Even the choreography is similar.”
Meanwhile, plagiarism controversies involving international stars and Korean idol songs have occurred in the past. In 2021, renowned Taiwanese singer and top actor Jay Chou faced allegations that his new song plagiarized INFINITE’s “Julia.” People claimed the intro sections were strikingly similar.
In response, Jay Chou stated, “I didn’t consider it a big deal,” and “The chord progression in the new song is a method that’s been in use for a long time. When chord progressions or instrumental arrangements are the same, songs can sound similar.” Regarding the plagiarism controversy, he maintained the position that “it is not plagiarism.”
