SBS has unveiled its powerhouse lineup of Grand Prize (Daesang) nominees for the upcoming 2024 SBS Drama Awards set for December 21st, featuring six of the industry’s most compelling performances this year: Ahn Bo Hyun, Hwang Jung Eum, Ji Sung, Jang Na Ra, Park Shin Hye, and Kim Nam Gil.
Flex X Cop star Ahn Bo Hyun solidified his presence as the leading star of the “exhilarating hero” genre—which has become SBS’s signature format. Through his unique character setup as a detective from a chaebol background, he brought the character’s charm to life, leading viewers to passionately call for a second season.
After stirring viewer outrage as Matthew Lee’s (Um Ki Joon) accomplice in The Escape of the Seven, Hwang Jung Eum transformed into the vengeful “Medusa” in The Escape of the Seven: Resurrection, earning critical acclaim for her methodical portrayal of Geum Ra Hee’s redemption journey.
Ji Sung delivered a tour-de-force performance in Connection as Jang Jae Kyung, a narcotics detective battling his own drug addiction. Critics lauded his nuanced portrayal that balanced the character’s righteous determination with the vulnerability of addiction.
Jang Na Ra captivated audiences in Good Partner as Cha Eun Kyung, a star divorce attorney who considers splitting couples her true calling. The role showcased a previously unseen side of the actress, marked by steely gazes and a commanding presence.
Park Shin Hye successfully shed her long-standing “innocent, plucky girl” image with a 180-degree turn in The Judge from Hell. As Kang Bit Na, she masterfully inhabited the role of a demon with lovable charms, marking a decisive break from her typical sympathetic characters.
Kim Nam Gil made a triumphant return after five years in The Fiery Priest 2, reprising his role as the anger management-challenged priest Kim Hae Il. His performance reignited the passion of the series’ devoted fanbase, proving the character’s enduring appeal.
