Kim Jong Kook has opened up for the first time about why he chose to hold a private wedding last year.
The singer and TV personality appeared on the July 29 episode of tvN’s You Quiz on the Block, where he looked back on the wedding that drew attention for being kept largely under wraps.
“You got married in secret,” Yoo Jae Suk said.
Kim responded, “I told everyone the venue and the date, but people made it sound like I hadn’t told anyone anything.”
He explained, “I wondered whether it might feel overwhelming for someone who had always lived as herself to suddenly be known as somebody’s wife. So I suggested that we just have a quiet wedding.”
Yoo noted, “Some people may have thought you were making too much of it.” Kim agreed, saying, “I can understand why they might think that.”
He went on to reveal that the guest list was kept to a minimum.
“We invited 50 people from my side and 50 from her side, and I could only invite around 20 of my own friends,” he said. “I’ve attended countless weddings since 1995. I can’t even begin to say how much I’ve given in wedding gifts, and I barely got any of it back. I accepted all of that.”
Kim also spoke warmly about married life.
“It’s been great,” he said. “There’s a basic sense of stability. No matter where I go or what I do, knowing there’s one person I need to think about gives me a real sense of security.”
He added that he makes a point of calling his wife by her name often.
“People say that women lose their names after they get married, so I try to call her by her name a lot,” he explained.
Asked whether the couple hopes to have children, Kim said, “Given my age, I’d be happy whether it’s a daughter or a son.” He then joked, “A son might be easier because I feel like I could raise him a little more roughly.”
