The WONDERfools is heading into its premiere under unexpected circumstances.
The drama has drawn unexpected attention ahead of its May 15 release following controversy surrounding lead actor Cha Eun Woo’s tax issue. Although he reportedly paid the full amount, public reaction remains divided, raising questions about whether the controversy could affect the drama’s reception.
The WONDERfools is a comic adventure set in the fictional city of Haeseong in 1999. It follows ordinary villagers who suddenly gain superpowers and must fight against villains threatening their town.
Attention has especially focused on Cha Eun Woo’s role in the series as a city official, with some viewers questioning whether the controversy could make it harder to fully immerse themselves in the story.
Still, the cast and production team expressed confidence in the drama during the press conference held on May 12th at JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square in Seoul.
When asked about the issue, lead actress Park Eun Bin avoided directly addressing the controversy and instead emphasized the teamwork behind the project.
“The director placed a lot of importance on the harmony of the entire team, and that was also what I focused on most while filming,” she said. “This drama is the result of everyone’s hard work.”
Director Yoo In Sik addressed the matter more directly, explaining that the controversy surfaced when editing and post-production were already well underway.
“We focused on the quality of the project itself and continued working on the final stages,” he said.
In the drama, Park Eun Bin plays Eun Chae Ni, the troublemaking granddaughter of a famous restaurant owner in Haeseong. Describing her character, the actress shared, “Her nickname is basically ‘troublemaker,’ and she’s a complete whirlwind. She’s probably the simplest and most carefree character I’ve played so far.”
The project is drawing even more attention because it reunites Park Eun Bin and director Yoo In Sik following the massive success of Extraordinary Attorney Woo.
Director Yoo praised the actress during the press conference, saying, “She’s an actress who makes you feel like nothing is impossible.”
