Arden Cho has clarified her position after facing criticism for publicly supporting Cha Eun Woo, who is currently embroiled in allegations involving unpaid taxes totaling roughly 20 billion KRW (approx. 14 million USD).
The actress, who voices Rumi in Netflix’s animated film KPop Demon Hunters, addressed the issue during a recent interview on January 30th. Before the interview officially began, a representative speaking on Arden Cho’s behalf offered a statement to explain the situation.
The clarification comes after Cho left a comment on Cha Eun Woo’s Instagram post, writing, “Always supporting you dongseng, Hwaiting!” The message quickly drew attention and sparked debate online amid the ongoing controversy surrounding Cha Eun Woo.
According to her representative, the comment was meant purely as a personal gesture of comfort based on their private friendship. “It was simply an expression of encouragement between acquaintances, with no intention of making any judgment or defending him,” they said. “We regret that a private comment became a public issue, and she will be more cautious moving forward.”
Arden Cho and Cha Eun Woo previously collaborated on a cover of “Free,” a duet sung by the characters Rumi and Jin Woo from the KPop Demon Hunters original soundtrack. During the interview, Arden Cho did not directly mention Cha Eun Woo.
Meanwhile, Cha Eun Woo has released a statement addressing the allegations, expressing remorse and reflection. “I am deeply reflecting on whether I was strict enough in fulfilling my duty as a taxpayer,” he said. “Although I am currently serving in the military, my enlistment was not an attempt to avoid this controversy. Last year, I reached a point where I could no longer postpone enlistment and entered service before the tax audit process was fully concluded.”
He continued, “To everyone who believed in me and supported me, as well as to those I have worked with, I am incredibly sorry for causing pain and exhaustion rather than repaying that trust.” He added, “I will fully cooperate with all remaining tax-related procedures and humbly accept and take responsibility for the final decision made by the authorities.”
