The K-pop industry is in a state of shock and mourning following the sudden passing of renowned music critic Kim Young Dae.

The tragic news was announced on the critic’s official X account on the morning of Christmas Day with a brief statement. “We deliver the news of Kim Young Dae’s passing,” the statement read. He was 48 years old.

The news was particularly devastating as it broke just moments after Kim’s voice was heard on national radio. On the very morning of his death, he appeared on a pre-recorded episode of CBS Radio show, where he cheerfully discussed Christmas carols.

The show’s production team quickly issued a statement. “This broadcast was filmed last week. However, after it aired on December 25th, we received the obituary for Kim Young Dae.” They added, “We are utterly heartbroken by this sudden tragic news. The production team extends its deepest condolences.”

Celebrities who worked with Kim shared their grief, remembering him as a warm mentor and a passionate advocate for musicians.

Jung Yong Hwa of CNBLUE posted a photo with the late critic, writing, “My heart is heavy. A person who recognized the value of music and always genuinely believed in me has become a star in the sky. I will cherish those feelings and memories for a long time. Please rest in peace.”

Former Wonder Girls member Woo Hye Rim, who worked with Kim on a radio show for two years, shared touching personal anecdotes. “Our conversations were delightful, and I learned so much about music from him,” she wrote. “I will always remember how he gave me a bouquet when I returned to radio, and even just a few days ago, he brought me medicine because I had mouth sores. I am truly grateful.”

Author and broadcaster Heo Ji Woong expressed deep regret over missed opportunities. “My last call with him was about an appearance… he said we absolutely had to do it later,” Heo recalled. “I haven’t been able to concentrate all morning. Let’s not promise ‘later.’ The times I’ve promised ‘later’ to people I care about, only to fail to keep those promises, are piling up.”

Singer Yoon Jong Shin also paid his respects, writing, “Young Dae, what is this news? You were someone who delicately paid attention to my detailed thoughts as a creator. Thank you. Let’s have more of those conversations later.”

A wake has been set up at the Chung-Ang University Hospital Funeral Hall. The funeral mass will be held on December 27th at Heukseok-dong Catholic Church, followed by burial at Seoul Memorial Park.
