Superstar couple Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin have made history at the 46th Blue Dragon Film Awards, becoming the first married couple ever to sweep the Best Actor and Best Actress categories on the same night.
The ceremony, held on November 19th at KBS Hall in Seoul, was dominated by director Park Chan Wook’s thriller No Other Choice, which took home six awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Music and Best Technical Achievement.
Hyun Bin won Best Actor for his powerful portrayal of Ahn Jung Geun, the Korean independence activist, in the film Harbin. In his acceptance speech, he paid tribute to the real-life figures who fought for Korea’s independence, saying, “I believe we are able to stand here today because of the countless individuals who sacrificed themselves to protect our nation.”
He also thanked his family in a touching moment: “I want to say I love you and thank you very much to my wife Ye Jin, whose very presence gives me so much strength, and to our son.”
Moments later, Son Ye Jin took the stage to accept Best Actress for her role as Lee Mi Ri in No Other Choice. It was her first film role in seven years. “My mind is a blur right now,” she admitted. “I remember receiving my first Blue Dragon Award at 27. Now, I’m approaching my mid-forties. Since getting married and becoming a mother, I feel my perspective on the world is changing.” She concluded her speech by echoing her husband’s sentiment, saying, “I want to share this joy with the two men I love most: my husband, Kim Tae Pyung, and our son, Kim Woo Jin.”
Both stars also won the Popular Star Award, meaning the couple took home a total of four trophies between them.
The supporting acting categories were fiercely contested, delivering some of the night’s most memorable moments. Lee Sung Min and Park Ji Hyun took home the trophies. Their acceptance speeches heated up the ceremony with a mix of laughter and tears.
Meanwhile, the coveted Best New Actor and Actress awards went to rising stars Ahn Bo Hyun and Kim Do Yeon. Best New Actor and Actress awards are often considered a once-in-a-lifetime honor.
