tvN’s new beauty-focused variety show, Perfect Glow, is off to a fresh start.
The show centers on Ra Mi Ran and Park Min Young, who lead a team of South Korea’s top hair and makeup experts. Their mission is to open a Korean-style beauty salon in Manhattan and show New York what K-beauty is all about.
The show is a new challenge for Park Min Young, who has long been known as a “Viewership Queen” for her many drama hits. However, her most recent drama Confidence Queen ended last month with 1% viewership rating. Perfect Glow, which premiered on November 8th, also started quietly with a 1.1% viewership rating.
Despite the modest ratings, the show’s content is already making a major impact. The first episode featured the team welcoming their first three clients, all with very different beauty goals.
The segment that went viral online immediately after the broadcast was the makeover of Mary Kate, a 38-year-old mom whose career was put on hold by childbirth and parenting. Viewers were stunned as the “golden hands” of makeup artist LeoJ and hairstylist Cha Hong transformed her tired and “lifeless” appearance into that of a captivating, glamorous actress. The makeover has sparked high anticipation for the “K-glow magic” the team will perform on more New Yorkers.
This success aligns perfectly with the vision of producer Kim Sang Ah, who said at the show’s press conference, “The catchphrase I wanted from the very beginning was, ‘You are more beautiful than you think.’ K-beauty is about finding the beauty you didn’t know you had, and our program will be the one to represent that.”
Proving her point, Mary Kate’s bright smile in the first episode provided a moment of emotion and healing for viewers, offering a chance to reflect on the true essence of beauty.
Perfect Glow airs its second episode on November 13 at 10:40 PM KST.
