Social media has gone wild over the school uniform designs from MBC’s upcoming drama The 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife (literal title), starring IU and Byeon Woo Seok.
Recently, photos of the drama’s “Royal Academy” uniforms spread across online communities after one cast member posted a behind-the-scenes snapshot from the set, captioned, “Filming The 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife.”
Fans are now eagerly anticipating the two lead actors’ “school uniform two-shot.” Rumors about the drama’s high school scenes had already been circulating, and speculation grew that the lead actors themselves—not younger stand-ins—would be donning the uniforms. Since both characters are written as graduates of the elite “Royal Academy,” viewers expect to see nostalgic glimpses of their student days.
Interestingly, IU and Byeon Woo Seok both share a history of making waves in dramas where they convincingly wore school uniforms well into their thirties. IU flawlessly portrayed Ae Soon from her teenage years through adulthood in the Netflix hit When Life Gives You Tangerines earlier this year, while Byeon Woo Seok caused a nationwide craze in Lovely Runner, where he transformed from a teenage swimming prodigy into a superstar in his thirties.
Both stars have also recently showcased their charm in school looks off-screen. IU wore a uniform for a nostalgic performance on KBS’s Gayo Stage and again in her June live clip for “Square’s dream,” while Byeon Woo Seok appeared in a lifestyle furniture brand campaign last May—once again in a school uniform.
Set in a modern constitutional monarchy, The 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife follows Sung Hee Joo (IU), a wealthy heiress frustrated by her commoner status, and Grand Prince Lee Wan (Byeon Woo Seok), a royal who can’t have anything. The drama is slated to premiere next year.
