From idol to actor, Park Jin Young continues to surprise audiences with bold character choices, and HI-FIVE is no exception.

In movie HI-FIVE, Park Jin Young portrays a character named Young Chun. He is the leader of a cult. Young Chun obtains the youth superpower by receiving a pancreas transplant from a psychic. Following this transformation, he wants to control the powers of the HI-FIVE members. Park Jin Young plays the reborn version of Young Chun. He imitates actor Shin Gu’s tone and character perfectly and delivers a powerful performance as a villain. In an interview, he discussed how he approached the special antagonist character and the secret behind his ability to seamlessly transition between television dramas and films.

Q. The filming of HI-FIVE was completed in 2021, and it recently premiered. After watching HI-FIVE for the first time, what are your thoughts?

We filmed with green screens, so I used my imagination during scenes. I had no idea how it would turn out. After seeing the final product, I realized our movie is extraordinary.

When I read the HI-FIVE script for the first time, I was apprehensive about playing a dual role with actor Shin Gu. During our meeting, I learned I needed to imitate the elder Yeong Chun’s (played by Shin Gu) speech patterns for my character. I thought to myself, ‘Oh, this is going to be a challenge,’ and I worried about it. Thankfully, Shin Gu read all my lines and graciously allowed me to record them. So I memorized my lines by mirroring Shin Gu’s speech.

Q. Is there a HI-FIVE character you wanted to play?

Yes, it was the role of Ji Sung (Ahn Jae Hong). Ji Sung is insecure and has a big ego. I thought it would have been so much fun to portray that character myself. My senior is such a genius, and I wondered what it would feel like if I were to take on the role.

Q. You and Lee Jae In were dedicated to practicing for the underground action scene. How did you and Jae In get along?

I am not a skilled action star, and there were times when I accidentally hit Jae In during our pretend fight. I was really grateful that he reassured me and said that it was okay and that I could be comfortable. It provided me with a lot of comfort. I thought to myself, “This friend is truly an amazing actor.”

Q. I heard that your family and military colleagues attended the HI-FIVE premiere. What did they think of the film?

They really enjoyed the movie. It made me realize that my younger friends, who are ten years younger than me, also like our film. I immediately told them to promote it. My father was very proud, and my mother said that our son fits the role perfectly.

Q. What is your next project?

We are currently discussing a project, and I think I will dedicate a lot of time to preparing for it.

Q. You mentioned that acting and singing can be unified. Do you still believe that?

I released an album recently, and it felt similar. Returning to acting and releasing an album was a challenge after an almost two-year break. However, alternating between music and acting energized me to take on both roles.
