Netflix has officially confirmed the production of a new original series Scandal (working title), revealing a star-studded cast led by Son Ye Jin, Ji Chang Wook and Nana.

Set in the rigid, morally conservative Joseon Dynasty—where love and desire were taboo—Scandal unfolds a provocative tale of forbidden liaisons, audacious love games, and the inner turmoil of three intertwined lives. At its heart is a woman too brilliant to remain confined by the limitations placed upon her gender and the most notorious playboy in the land.

The series is based on the 2003 Korean film Untold Scandal, itself a reimagining of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’s Dangerous Connections, transposed from the decadent salons of pre-revolutionary France to the highly stratified world of Joseon Korea. The original film was a breakout success, attracting 3.52 million admissions despite its R-rating, praised for its lush visuals, sensual storyline, and richly layered performances.

Son Ye Jin plays Madam Jo, a woman of immense talent and charm whose only crime is being born a woman in a time that afforded her no freedom. She turns to the only battlefield available—romantic strategy—and proposes a daring wager of seduction to a man who adores her.

Ji Chang Wook stars as Jo Won, Joseon’s ultimate playboy, uninterested in status or politics and instead drawn to thrill and pleasure. A charming rake who scoffs at love, Jo Won throws himself into the wager with the goal of winning Madam Jo’s heart—by any means necessary.

Nana takes on the role of Hee Yeon, a virtuous widow trying to uphold her honor, only to find herself ensnared in Jo Won’s flirtations. Failing to push him away, Hee Yeon finds herself in a quiet inner storm.

Behind the camera is acclaimed director Jung Ji Woo, known for Tune in for Love and Netflix’s Somebody, marking another shift in his already diverse filmography. The script is penned by The Art of Negotiation writer Lee Seung Young and Ahn Hye Song, who worked on the adaptation of Somebody. The series is produced by MOVIEROCK, the studio behind the films Tune in for Love, Midnight Runners, and Pilot.
