Mark, formerly of NCT, has officially apologized following controversy over wearing a T-shirt featuring the Confederate flag.
On the 23rd, his agency Upper Room issued a detailed statement via its official social media, apologizing for the recent racial controversy.
“We sincerely apologize for causing concern and disappointment through the vintage T-shirt shown in recently released photos,” the agency said. “The item was selected as a vintage fashion piece, but we later became aware of the historical meaning and sensitivity of the symbol on the shirt.”
They added, “We tried to ensure the symbol was not visible in official content, but it became exposed as related images were shared. Regardless of intent, this was something that should have been reviewed more carefully.”
The Confederate flag is associated with the American Civil War, when the Confederacy broke away from the United States in support of slavery. Today, it is widely viewed in the U.S. as a symbol of racism and white supremacy, and has caused repeated controversies when worn by public figures.
The agency stated, “The responsibility for this issue lies entirely with the company and the artist. Mark and Upper Room oppose racism, hate, discrimination, and all forms of intolerance.”
They also said they will strengthen their review process for outfits and content to prevent similar issues in the future.
“We sincerely apologize to everyone who was hurt or felt uncomfortable. We will act with greater responsibility going forward,” they added.
Meanwhile, Mark debuted with NCT in 2016 and gained global popularity through NCT 127 and NCT Dream. After ending his exclusive contract with SM Entertainment, he launched his independent label Upper Room and is now focusing on his solo career.
